Holy Matrimony

(CCC  1601 - 1666)

"The matrimonial covenant, by which a man and a woman establish between themselves a partnership of the whole of life, is by its nature ordered toward the good of the spouses and procreation and education of offspring; this covenant between baptized persons has been raised by Christ the Lord to the dignity of a sacrament."  - CCC 1601

Effects of Marriage

  • Ordered to the generation and education of children

  • Ordered to the good of the couple, which includes the union of the spouses.

  • Sign of Christ's union with the Church, it empowers the couple to love each other. Establishes the "domestic church" of the home.
